A crown fully covers a tooth that has lost a lot of structure. A bridge closes the gap of a missing tooth with support from the neighbouring teeth.

What is this treatment?
Teeth with large fillings, fractures or root canal treatment can weaken over time. A crown covers the outer surface of the tooth, protects it and restores chewing function.
For a bridge, the teeth on both sides of the gap are prepared for crowns and the artificial tooth filling the gap is attached to these crowns. An implant is also an option for a missing tooth; which one is suitable depends on the condition of the neighbouring teeth and the bone.
The material is chosen together with your dentist according to the position of the tooth, the bite force and your aesthetic expectations.
How does the treatment work?
- 01Examination and planningThe condition of the teeth and gums is assessed and X-rays are taken if needed.
- 02Preparing the toothUnder local anaesthesia, the tooth surface is reduced so that the crown can fit.
- 03Impression and temporary crownAn impression is taken; a temporary crown is fitted until the permanent one is ready.
- 04Try-in and cementationFit, colour and bite are checked and the crown is permanently cemented.

The tooth tissue under the crown is alive and can decay. Cleaning the area where the crown meets the gum and regular check-ups are important.
It depends on the material, oral hygiene and habits such as teeth grinding. With regular check-ups it can be used for many years.
Yes, the supporting teeth of a bridge are reduced. For this reason an implant is also considered where suitable.
